50 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
ASPHER was founded 50 years ago on the initiative of the World Health Organization – 50 years actually bringing vast developments in public health, both in terms of policies and as concerns education and training and the development of research methods and scientific production. The anniversary was celebrated during the recent Deans’ & Directors’ Retreat at the National School of Public Health in Athens, Greece, during 25th – 27th May, 2016, where also ASPHER’s 50th Anniversary Book was released.
From a relatively small club of university departments and schools of public health the association has grown to include more than 110 institutional members situated all over Europe plus a few associate members in other parts of the world. The Anniversary Book tells the history of ASPHER, as reported by many of those who were responsible for the active role of the association and its members, in the European context as well as within national and local frameworks. Also the perspectives for the future are presented and discussed, in the context of ASPHER's strategy for 2016-20.
FROM POTENTIAL TO ACTION IN PUBLIC HEALTH
ASPHER and its European Public Health Reference Framework (EPHRF) Council has launched a three-volume text, with the intention to create a solid basis for professional discussion of the public health competences necessary to form the basis for good public health practice, as indicated by ASPHER’s lists of public health core competences and WHO Europe’s Essential Public Health Operations (EPHOs), respectively.
The present edition is hoped to be subject to professional discussion and commenting during the months to come – until start October 2016 – where after an adjusted edition will be produced and discussed at the European Public Health Conference in Vienna in November 2016.
Professional comments and suggestions will be welcomed, thank you. Please send your contribution to email@example.com.
NEXT PRESIDENCY PRIORITIES 2017-2019
The schools and departments of public health which are members of ASPHER show a profound level of commitment, genuine interest, willingness and trust in working together to develop, strengthen public health education and training to produce public health workforce to operate effectively in the complex, evolving and insecure international and global health systems context including: health inequalities in and across countries, migration crisis and related cultural challenges, multi-comorbidities, non-communicable diseases, a growing burden of mental health, aging and health workforce shortages as well as a range of unmet health needs of the European populations. While focusing the strategic vision for ASPHER around Public Health Workforce development and systematic methods to it, next ASPHER presidency will be based on principles of: continuation, collaboration, wide stakeholder involvement and sustainability.

This year we celebrate 50 years of working together - a good moment to look back at everything we have accomplished. ASPHER and ASPHER members are involved in a manifold of successful and exciting activities and we want to make these accomplishments more visible to all members of our community. In order to enhance the communication from the Secretariat to the members as well as among ASPHER members, we have put together this newsletter for you. As such, it does not want to repeat what other organisations say in their own newsletters. Rather, it is a platform to disseminate information and a tool at your full disposal to engage with other members. By ASPHER, for ASPHER.
